# Best Rated Company

> A free UK business directory for new and small local businesses. It lists usually up to three businesses per trade in each town. A business gets a Verified badge only after three checks. Nobody can pay to be listed or to be verified.

## What a Verified badge means
A business has passed three checks:
1. Online look-up: we look the business up online, including its website and its public reviews, good and bad, and note anything that should worry a customer. A new business with little online yet can still pass.
2. Phone call: we ring the business during working hours, at a time it will not expect, to check that it answers with its own name. A business can keep its number off its listing; it is still rung for the check.
3. Email confirmation: we email the address on the listing with a one-time link, and the business approves its listing or asks for it to be removed.

We repeat the checks every two years, and each listing shows when it was last checked. We do not check insurance, audit accounts or finances, inspect work, or guarantee any job. Customers should ask any business for its insurance certificate before hiring. Listings that have not passed the checks yet are marked "Not yet verified" and are not recommendations.

## Featured listings
Featured is an optional paid upgrade, for 12 months, for businesses that are already listed and Verified. It adds labelled cards on the home and browse pages and below the listings on other pages for the same town, extra details on the listing, and a monthly report of views and clicks. It never buys a place, a Verified badge or a higher position on a trade and town page, and every Featured listing is labelled. The order of listings on each page changes daily.

## Who runs it
Run by Adrian, who also runs Bellwoods Removals & Storage, a family removals business in Huddersfield. Some listed businesses are affiliated with us. A business counts as affiliated if Adrian owns or runs it, someone in his household runs it, or he has a financial interest in it, including being paid to work on it. Affiliated businesses are labelled, shown separately, never given a Verified badge or Featured, and do not take one of the places. Businesses run by other relatives go through the same three checks as everyone else.
